River and shore
Over the last few years I have spent more time photographing the river landscape near my home to more root myself to the environment here n Southern Idaho. I have now begun translating these studies to paint and here in this series mesh them with themes from ongoing studies of the male figure as a catalyst for a conversation on the crossroads of my own sexual identity, patriarchy within American culture, and gender representation. Using magazine images cut out from erotica and periodicals, I move images from their original context and entwine them within the landscape studies. I am interested in challenging the viewer’s perception while allowing them to fill in narratives of their own. The surface is treated as an object with paint used to reshape, redefine, and sometimes obscure the various figural and landscape images.
